Entering the sick leave
Statutory sick pay must be added consecutively (this is really important!) from the first missed shift until the day the Nandoca returns to work. Please note – If you only add it for the dates that they were scheduled to work they won’t get paid the correct amount.

Incorrect:

The Nandocas contracted hours need to be spread evenly per week (Monday – Sunday). Please note - If the absence starts mid week, any unworked contracted hours need to be processed over the remaining days of that week.
For example: someone is on 30 hours contract and they already worked 5 hours on Monday then spread the rest 25 hours across the rest of the week.

The below is a breakdown for regular SSP (Statutory Sick Pay).
Evidence required
- Nandocas should complete a self-certification for the first 7 days of absence
- Provide a doctor’s note or hospital note for sickness on the 8th day and thereafter
Entitlement
- The Nandoca must be off sick for more than 3 days in a row (payment begins on day 4)
- The Nandoca must earn an average of £123 per week in the 8 weeks prior to the illness
- If they have been employed for less than 8 weeks, we must calculate their average based on the weeks they’ve worked (eg: if someone has worked for us for 2 weeks and earned £200 in one week and £300 in the second, their average weekly earnings will be £250)
- The Nandoca must Pprovide proof of illness
Exceptions (will not be paid if)
- They have already received 28 weeks of SSP (the maximum amount that can be paid)
- Are being paid statutory maternity pay
- Are off sick with a pregnancy related illness in the 4 weeks before the due date
- The Nandoca has been sick on and off continuously for a linked period of more than 3 yrs (linked means periods of absence are within 8 weeks of each other)
What will they be paid?
- Nothing for the first three days of illness UNLESS-
- Illnesses are ‘linked’- to be linked each absence must be at least 4 days long and within 8 weeks of each other
- £99.35 per week thereafter. This value is payable as a day rate at 1/5th or 1/7th of that value if depending on whether paid lunar or weekly.
- This amount will only be payable IF entitled (see above)
If they do not qualify:
- We should provide them with a SSP1 form in the following time frames:
- Within 7 days of them going off sick if they do not qualify for SSP. So someone who is sick for a week effective 12th October should receive their SSP1 form in the post no later than 17th October (as Sunday is a non-post day).
- By the 23rd week of absence for someone who is on long-term sick and whose SSP will end before their illness does.
- SSP1 forms should come directly from payroll and require a company stamp and signature. If you are placing your Nandoca on SSP and they do not qualify for payment please contact the Payroll team to provide the form.
